The city of Salzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in summer the hub of the high arts as part of the "Salzburg Festival". It is known for its world-famous Advent market, birthplace of Wolfgang A. Mozart, hotspot of the film classic "Sound of Music".

The province of Salzburg covers an area of 7,156.03 km². The highest elevation in Salzburg is the Großvenediger with an altitude of 3662 m. Of the state border, 174 km are also the Austrian state border, for the most part in the northwest with Bavaria/Germany and for a small part in the southwest with South Tyrol/Italy. Otherwise, Salzburg borders Tyrol in the west and southwest, Upper Austria in the northeast, Styria (Schladming/Ennstal) in the east and Carinthia in the south.
