Our restaurant tips around Salzburg
Most hobbies and preferences are quite individual. We do the sport we feel most comfortable with, define ourselves by our taste in movies or music, and have a style of dress all our own. There are a few things that everyone agrees on - one of those things is: good food pays off.
Everyone loves to eat well. To make sure that your next trip to Salzburg Land is also an absolute culinary highlight, we have compiled 5 insider tips for this blog post that will fill your heart and stomach in equal measure. And don't worry: Even if Salzburg has been your home for a long time, you might still find the perfect restaurant for your next trip in this post.
At the gourmet and connoisseur hotel Sonnhof by Vitus Winkler in St. Veit im Pongau, creative, high-quality and down-to-earth culinary art is served with regional products directly from the province of Salzburg. It is not for nothing that the "Kräuterreich" restaurant under the direction of chef Vitus Winkler has been awarded four Gault-Millau toques and four "A la Carte" stars: Instead of the usual food from the menu, the chef puts together the courses individually for you. Specify what you don't want to eat and let yourself be surprised by unique creations that are always unparalleled. Even the chef of the century, Eckart Witzigmann, described by the New York Times as the "chef of kings and gods", praises Vitus Winkler's inventiveness and says that he "masterfully combines regional influences and products with his knowledge gained outside of Austria. That is what makes his cuisine so appealing".
Of course, the cuisine at the Genießerhotel Sonnhof is tailored to every palate: Vitus Winkler also conjures up vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free dishes on request, and is also an expert in the field of local herbs straight from the Salzburger Land. You can really experience this not only with a 6-course menu, but also with a cooking class directly in Vitus' kitchen.
Another excellent chef can be found in Filzmoos in the district of St. Johann: we are talking about the Hauben and star chef Johanna Maier. The chefs in her restaurant stand for a holistic art of cooking that not only conveys the highest level of enjoyment, but also a natural sense of well-being and conscious quality time when eating.
The Maier, a family-run restaurant in the middle of Salzburger Land, combines tradition and modernity while remaining regional, sustainable and healthy. With particular simplicity, classic dishes are served here and not just eaten, but experienced intensively. And if you really want to fall in love with cooking, you can attend a cooking school seminar and learn that preparing food is not a necessity, but a passion.
The Oberforsthofalm is a traditional, family-run inn in St. Johann im Pongau. For over 30 years, the Mayr family has been spoiling its guests here and serving up upscale specialities from the Salzburg region. The picturesque inn is located at around 800m above sea level and offers all diners a breathtaking view of the Salzach valley. Of course, the local chef places a lot of emphasis on healthy, fresh meat, so regional ingredients are used to create delicacies that also delight critics - from a 90-point rating at Falstaff to the "golden backerbse", the Oberforsthofalm has won many awards that confirm our experience: Anyone looking for good food should definitely pay the inn a visit.
By the way: The kitchen at the Oberforsthofalm always offers seasonal specialities directly from the Salzburg region! Until 15 November, the alp traditionally hosts the "Game Weeks". There you can enjoy finely prepared game specialities from deer, wild boar, chamois or wild fowl - even those who are not big fans of game meat will be well catered for here. The crowning finale of the game weeks is the goose special week from 9-15 November.
Varied, yet still traditional regional cuisine can also be found in Altenmarkt am Zauchensee, only about 5 minutes' drive from the Eben Outlet Centre. The Landgasthof Laudersbach in the middle of Salzburger Land was already mentioned in 1350 as Gut Glaudersbach, but its roots probably go back to a tavern in Roman times.
In the midst of Salzburg's "Ski Amadé" sports world - and only a stone's throw away from the Eben outlet centre - the kitchen around nutrition expert and chef Nadja Jäger-Wenter creates local specialities directly from the tradition-rich province of Salzburg, but does not shy away from international, for example Italian dishes. Nevertheless, the origin of the ingredients remains as regional as possible: from Pongau game to Tennengau alpine cheese to Lungau "Eachtlingen", Gasthof Laudersbach always uses products from the immediate surroundings - and you can taste it.
So that all vegetarians and vegans don't miss out, we have another purely vegetarian treat for you: Kraut & Rüben in Bad Hofgastein. A good hour's drive south of Salzburg hides another insider tip for modern cuisine without fish or meat: Rösti, polenta slices, risotto or homemade pancakes make every palate happy, while the menu is complemented by seasonal dishes.
In autumn these are plums and pumpkins, which will be replaced by lentils and hot sour cherries in the coming winter. The restaurant in Salzburg Land also scores points not only for its tasty cuisine but also for its pleasant ambience - since its renovation, the new part of the Kraut & Rüben has been furnished according to Feng Shui principles in order to offer all customers the optimal environment for delicious food. Cheers!
The attentive reader will have noticed that all these restaurants are near the Eben outlet centre. Of course, that's no coincidence - we always know best what's right under our noses. And if you're already in the vicinity, it's definitely worth taking a detour to our outlet centre! We are currently working hard on new shopping offers for all bargain hunters who attach great importance to quality, so a visit is definitely worthwhile. Also in compliance with hygiene regulations, we want to offer our customers a shopping experience to remember - preferably through a new favourite outfit or perfectly coordinated, functional sports gear.
