We use the first extremely spring-like days this year not only for sunny skiing, as recently in the region around Bischofshofen, but also for the start of the biking season. Together with guide Gerhard Hafner we decide on a great tour around the Untersberg. The mountain massif stretches between Bayerisch-Gmain and Bischofshofen in Berchtesgadener Land and Grossgmain and Grödig on the Salzburg side. As the highest point of this tour is at 708 metres, it is also perfect for the first rides in spring.
But before the riding fun begins, we get the right equipment. In order to cut a good figure on the bike in terms of function, wearing comfort and appearance, we go to the Outlet Center Eben. In the Odlo shop, the right items are quickly found thanks to the expert advice. With a pair of shorts, a cycling jersey and a jacket in their luggage, they head to the CUBE Store by RABE Bike in Ainring-Hammerau. Here you will find a large selection of different bikes, whether road bike, mountain bike or e-bike. The competent team will help you find the right bike.
Well-equipped, we can hardly wait to start the tour. The starting point is at Gasthof Schorn in St. Leonhard near Grödig. From here we cross the border and take the B305 to Marktschellenberg. The trail then leads us along the Ache river to the Berchtesgaden salt mine. We then take a short detour into the centre of Berchtesgaden - the combination with the impressive Watzmann in the background is simply a dream. This is followed by a partly steep ascent to the Aschauer Weiherbad and then another rapid descent to Bischofswiesen.
From here, the route leads along cycle paths in the direction of Bayerisch Gmain. Shortly before, after Hallthurm, a path branches off towards Wolfschwang, which leads to the Latschenwirt. Unfortunately, this inn was closed when we left, otherwise we would have liked to stop here. Via Fürstenbrunn we reach the beautiful Glanegg Castle, which is owned by the Mayr-Melnhof family. From here it is not far to our starting point in St. Leonhard.
All in all, it's a really nice, entertaining and varied tour. Thus an extremely successful start to the cycling season that definitely makes you want to do more. The loop around the Untersberg is not only perfect as a start to the cycling season, but certainly also in summer. With the Almbachklamm gorge in Marktschellenberg and the Aschauerweiher natural swimming pool in Bischofswiesen, there are two attractions on the way that also provide cooling on hot days.
Since we are sporty throughout, we have actually always used our own power to get around until now. The ride with the CUBE Reaction is therefore also a premiere in terms of e-bikes. And I have to admit, on the steeper climbs it is a real relief and support. And if you ride in "eco mode" almost all the time like we do, you can still contribute enough of your own pedalling power.
The Outlet Center Eben is your hotspot for sports, fashion and lifestyle brands at outlet prices in Salzburger Land. It is located in the heart of Pongau, about 45 minutes' drive south of the Mozart city of Salzburg, conveniently situated directly on the A10 Tauern motorway. On a total area of approx. 4,500 square metres, currently 7 stores present over 30 national and international sports and lifestyle brands in their own shops or in so-called multi-brand stores. Last year's collections and sample collections are offered at 30 to 70 percent off the manufacturer's recommended retail price all year round.
She is known as one of the best female chefs in Europe. She is the first female chef in the world to have collected 4 Gault Millau bonnets and 2 Michelin stars. She stands for regional, high-quality and seasonal dishes - and lives and works not even 15 minutes away from Eben im Pongau. We are talking about Johanna Maier, an accomplished top chef, cookbook author and teacher directly from the province of Salzburg for many years. In this blog post, you can find out what her expectations of a good dish are, how this relates to her connection with nature and what all this has to do with the Outlet Center Eben.
For Johanna Maier, cooking is more than just preparing dishes. It is the love of nature, eliciting one's own creativity, consciousness in eating, art and philosophy. You can taste this not only in her dishes - it becomes especially clear when you attend one of her cooking classes. Here, Johanna Maier talks with joy and passion about her herb garden and the regional ingredients from which she conjures up a menu with her course participants that even the gods could not disdain. The vegetables, mushrooms, meat and fish come directly from the Salzburg region, sometimes delivered by old acquaintances, sometimes searched for, fished and picked by herself. She is also supported by her husband Dietmar, who secured the fishing rights to the nearby lake years ago.
The delicatessen is also located in Filzmoos in Salzburger Land and is only a stone's throw away from the cooking school. In addition to the products already mentioned, you can also find the finest balsamic vinegar, cooking accessories, vouchers and the grandiose cookbooks by the award-winning chef. The prices are fair, the range of products is lovingly put together - and if you get stuck, the best advisor of all is there to help you.
This book is more than a simple cookbook - it is an ode to the end of the year, a paean to the beauty of the Christmas season, a tribute to traditions that you inherit from your grandparents and pass on to your own grandchildren. "Anyone who delves into the book can almost smell the homemade biscuits and hear the Christ Child flying past the window." - anyone who spends another Christmas without this marvel is missing out.
Dezember an unserem Weihnachts-Gewinnspiel teilnehmen!
Everyone loves to eat well. To make sure that your next trip to Salzburg Land is also an absolute culinary highlight, we have compiled 5 insider tips for this blog post that will fill your heart and stomach in equal measure. And don't worry: Even if Salzburg has been your home for a long time, you might still find the perfect restaurant for your next trip in this post.
At the gourmet and connoisseur hotel Sonnhof by Vitus Winkler in St. Veit im Pongau, creative, high-quality and down-to-earth culinary art is served with regional products directly from the province of Salzburg. It is not for nothing that the "Kräuterreich" restaurant under the direction of chef Vitus Winkler has been awarded four Gault-Millau toques and four "A la Carte" stars: Instead of the usual food from the menu, the chef puts together the courses individually for you. Specify what you don't want to eat and let yourself be surprised by unique creations that are always unparalleled. Even the chef of the century, Eckart Witzigmann, described by the New York Times as the "chef of kings and gods", praises Vitus Winkler's inventiveness and says that he "masterfully combines regional influences and products with his knowledge gained outside of Austria. That is what makes his cuisine so appealing".
Of course, the cuisine at the Genießerhotel Sonnhof is tailored to every palate: Vitus Winkler also conjures up vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free dishes on request, and is also an expert in the field of local herbs straight from the Salzburger Land. You can really experience this not only with a 6-course menu, but also with a cooking class directly in Vitus' kitchen.
Another excellent chef can be found in Filzmoos in the district of St. Johann: we are talking about the Hauben and star chef Johanna Maier. The chefs in her restaurant stand for a holistic art of cooking that not only conveys the highest level of enjoyment, but also a natural sense of well-being and conscious quality time when eating.
The Maier, a family-run restaurant in the middle of Salzburger Land, combines tradition and modernity while remaining regional, sustainable and healthy. With particular simplicity, classic dishes are served here and not just eaten, but experienced intensively. And if you really want to fall in love with cooking, you can attend a cooking school seminar and learn that preparing food is not a necessity, but a passion.
The Oberforsthofalm is a traditional, family-run inn in St. Johann im Pongau. For over 30 years, the Mayr family has been spoiling its guests here and serving up upscale specialities from the Salzburg region. The picturesque inn is located at around 800m above sea level and offers all diners a breathtaking view of the Salzach valley. Of course, the local chef places a lot of emphasis on healthy, fresh meat, so regional ingredients are used to create delicacies that also delight critics - from a 90-point rating at Falstaff to the "golden backerbse", the Oberforsthofalm has won many awards that confirm our experience: Anyone looking for good food should definitely pay the inn a visit.
By the way: The kitchen at the Oberforsthofalm always offers seasonal specialities directly from the Salzburg region! Until 15 November, the alp traditionally hosts the "Game Weeks". There you can enjoy finely prepared game specialities from deer, wild boar, chamois or wild fowl - even those who are not big fans of game meat will be well catered for here. The crowning finale of the game weeks is the goose special week from 9-15 November.
Varied, yet still traditional regional cuisine can also be found in Altenmarkt am Zauchensee, only about 5 minutes' drive from the Eben Outlet Centre. The Landgasthof Laudersbach in the middle of Salzburger Land was already mentioned in 1350 as Gut Glaudersbach, but its roots probably go back to a tavern in Roman times.
In the midst of Salzburg's "Ski Amadé" sports world - and only a stone's throw away from the Eben outlet centre - the kitchen around nutrition expert and chef Nadja Jäger-Wenter creates local specialities directly from the tradition-rich province of Salzburg, but does not shy away from international, for example Italian dishes. Nevertheless, the origin of the ingredients remains as regional as possible: from Pongau game to Tennengau alpine cheese to Lungau "Eachtlingen", Gasthof Laudersbach always uses products from the immediate surroundings - and you can taste it.
So that all vegetarians and vegans don't miss out, we have another purely vegetarian treat for you: Kraut & Rüben in Bad Hofgastein. A good hour's drive south of Salzburg hides another insider tip for modern cuisine without fish or meat: Rösti, polenta slices, risotto or homemade pancakes make every palate happy, while the menu is complemented by seasonal dishes.
In autumn these are plums and pumpkins, which will be replaced by lentils and hot sour cherries in the coming winter. The restaurant in Salzburg Land also scores points not only for its tasty cuisine but also for its pleasant ambience - since its renovation, the new part of the Kraut & Rüben has been furnished according to Feng Shui principles in order to offer all customers the optimal environment for delicious food. Cheers!

The problem is well known: You look for special activities in the regional holiday area, but you always end up in tourist traps. Overpriced tours with boring guides and overcrowded places make for bad experiences, and even if you find a nice bike tour, you don't get much of the regional flair outside the pretty landscape.
The area around Schladming in Styria is a true paradise for cyclists. One of the region's cycling tour classics, the Ennsradweg, combines adventure and relaxation in a unique way. Along famous mountains like the Dachstein, past tempting bathing lakes and across picturesque national parks, this bike tour is a unique experience for young and old.
Look forward to your next family adventure, a sporty-romantic trip for two or the long-awaited adventure trip with your best friends - and always come to rest in the perfect accommodation thanks to Velontour. Whether your destination is the view from the high Dachstein or a snack in one of the romantic orchards along the Danube: thanks to the regional trains along the Enns Cycle Path, you can always cover parts of the route by train to make the experience your very own. Experience your cycling tour on your own terms!
A little insider tip for cycling tours in Salzburger Land is the Zederhaus route through the Riedingtal Nature Park. The bike tour starts in the beautiful market town of St. Michael and leads directly into the Rieding Nature Park. The route takes you along the main road in the direction of Zederhaus, where the famous "Mühlenweg" awaits you as a cultural highlight.
Breathtaking mountain panoramas, crystal-clear mountain lakes and rustic alpine huts and inns await you on the way. We recommend taking at least a short break here to enjoy the regional specialities in the midst of the idyllic landscape. Here, too, Velontour's motto fits perfectly: A bike tour becomes a pleasure when you combine it with a stop.
When shopping in our fashion outlet near Salzburg, many customers ask themselves why brand-name clothing is so cheap with us. To answer this question, you have to understand the principle of an outlet:
Originally, the "outlet" concept comes from the USA - and like so many other ideas, this one has also made its way to Europe, where designer outlets have fought for their place in the shopping world in recent years. The recipe for success sounds simple at first: offer brands at lower prices than the competition. But how is this possible without compromising on quality? We take a look at where our brands come from and what is so special about them.
Outlet goods are therefore brand-name clothes that are not in short supply, but simply no longer brand-new, but still fashionable, of high quality and fully in the spirit of the times. B-ware is also sold in outlet centres, even if only to a vanishingly small extent.
The latest fashions can always be found in retail outlets. Outlet centres are the perfect complement to this - those who want to shop price-consciously will find breathtaking bargains and fashionable offers of high quality here. The image of full halls at factory sales is also now long outdated: Modern outlet stores have their very own stylish flair and present themselves in a stylish boutique manner.
In addition to all these reasons, there are two other factors that allow our brands to offer high quality goods at significantly lower prices than a normal brand shop can:
On the one hand, returns or remaining stock from the previous year's collections can be sold off at favourable prices - this saves the brand considerably on storage costs. In addition, a fashion outlet requires less space for the sale of branded clothing compared to conventional retail shops and is often located outside city centres, which results in significantly lower rental costs.

Don't let heavy luggage prevent you from hiking, but look forward to the relaxed descent during the ascent - a reward you have earned by conquering the summit! And if you haven't got all your equipment together yet, why not take a detour to our Outlet Center Eben! There you will find high-quality sports equipment and robust leisure wear from various well-known brands at a low price. To give you a little inspiration for your next bike and hike holiday in and around Salzburg, we have picked out a wonderful tour for you.
The path up to the Lackenkogel is wonderfully varied and, as a planned bike and hike tour, a real adventure trip.
The tour starts with an idyllic bike ride up to the Lackenalm. The path over the mountain ridge between Flachau and Radstadt offers a great view of the surrounding villages, of which the municipality of Altenmarkt is particularly captivating with its fairytale charm.
Once you arrive at the Lackenalm, it's off the bike and up to the summit. This ascent is particularly versatile with its both flat and somewhat steeper hiking trail sections and guarantees breathtaking views. At the top, you can enjoy an enchanting panoramic view of the picturesque landscape and all the surrounding mountains, especially the Dachstein with its impressive double mountain range.
After the descent back to the Lackenalm, you enjoy a peaceful snack of homemade food and drink before the final descent, the second highlight of this little trip. Here you will feel the fresh wind in your face one last time for this tour, rewarding you for the previous ascent.
More and more people are foregoing excursions to faraway countries and instead travel to the most beautiful places in their home country. To give you a little inspiration for your next holiday within Austria, we have put together 6 popular destinations for your upcoming cultural or leisure holiday in Salzburg and the surrounding area!
Zell am See is probably the most popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts near Salzburg. But the idyllic municipality offers something for every season: not only the historic town centre with its parish church of St. Hippolyt and Rosenberg Castle invites you to linger, but also Lake Zell itself is one of Austria's tourist destinations. Surf or sail on the crystal-clear water against a breathtaking backdrop - or jump into the fresh water yourself.
Salzburg's landmark sits majestically on the fortress hill above the city. The largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe is the most visited sight in Austria outside Vienna - and not without reason. Arriving there on foot or by fortress train, you begin your journey into the past. Exciting museums, medieval architecture, dedication to Salzburg's baroque cultural landscape and a lot of attention to detail make your trip here unforgettable. Immerse yourself in the world of the princes and bishops of the Middle Ages!
Our Eben Outlet Centre in Eben im Pongau is this year's hottest shopping insider tip! Situated close to the Salzburg Slate Alps, the Tauern Outlet has been set in a picturesque backdrop, making the walk to the outlet itself ravishingly pretty. Once you've arrived, you can spend an extensive day shopping here and stock up on new brand-name clothes - and you don't even have to dig deep into your wallet.
What's more, it's not just everyday clothes that you'll find here: We'll equip you with high-quality sportswear, whether you're a hiker, cyclist, climber or passionate about winter sports.
This salt mine is only half an hour away from Salzburg and offers a unique insight into the history of white gold. Celtic tribes knew about this mining site as early as 2500 years ago, and even in the 17th century the mine's yields were still being used to expand Salzburg's city centre. All dry history? Not at all! Here you will experience a ride on the mine train, long miners' slides, mystical paths through the salt galleries and even a raft trip on an underground salt lake. After your cave exploration, you can visit the Celtic village, an open-air museum that takes you on a journey to the world of two and a half millennia ago.
Of course, we also have something up our sleeve for all the hikers among you! Directly in the south of Salzburg is the Berchtesgaden National Park, which belongs to Germany. Its expansive landscapes and fresh, soothing air provide the perfect scenery for a healing hike. That's why it's not just us humans who feel at home there: snow hares, capercaillies, salamanders and even ibex bring life to the national park. And who knows - maybe even a marmot or two will greet you.
Climbing is more than just a sport - it's conquering ancient giants. One of these giants is very close to Salzburg, and not far from our outlet either! As the highest mountain in Upper Austria and Styria, the Dachstein offers an incomparable climbing experience: with the "Randkluft", the oldest via ferrata in the Eastern Alps, several children's & youth via ferrata routes and the popular Jungfrausteig, everyone will find the adventure their heart desires. The view from the "Brandriedel", a famous vantage point above Ramsau, was once described by the mountaineer and writer Kurt Maix with the words: "At the foot of the wall, however, a land spreads out, so paradisiacally beautiful that the Lord God must have created it in a giving mood" - and there is nothing more to add to this.
Our tip!
Bleiben Sie gespannt!
